If you encounter a bear, you should remain calm and try to de-escalate the situation. Most bears are peaceful and just want to be left alone, and a surprise or sudden movement can trigger an attack. Here are some tips for difference scenarios:
- Bear is unaware: If you surprise a bear, slowly back away while avoiding eye contract and speaking calmly in low tones. You can also wave your arms to let the bear know you're human.
- Bear is aware: If the bear is aware of your presence, stand your ground and try to appear larger by waving your arms, shouting, clapping, or banging a stick. You can also try standing on a rock or a stump. If the bear follows you, get your bear spray ready and prepare to fight back.
- Bear charges: If the bear charges, remain calm and spray it directly in the face or eyes with bear spray with it's 15-30 feet away. If you don't have bear spray, play dead if it's a grizzly bear, or fight back if it's a black bear. Once the bear retreats, leave the area as quickly as possible, but don't run.
